ROARY RACQUEL

Art Department. Filmmaker. Storyteller.

Roary Racquel is an experimental filmmaker and assistant art director based in San Francisco, Los Angeles, and London. Her passion for design is evident in each unique look she creates for many films. With her strong attention to subtle details, she weaves touches of German Expressionism, surreal imagery, bold textures and stimulating colour palettes to create visceral experiences of layered spaces.

Artist and builder, Roary Racquel first fell in love with design and fabrication through filmmaking. After obtaining her degree in Digital Film and Video Production at the Art Institute of San Francisco, Roary applied her passion for the arts towards production design and set building.

Roary has since formed strong roots in Carpenter’s Union and IATSE. Through these avenues, she has worked on many commercial construction job sites including the Transamerica Pyramid, Chase Center, Gilead Sciences, El Camino Hospital, and on yearlong installs with Google. She continues to apply her creative sensibilities on projects like sets featured in Netflix Series as part of the construction team, bench worker, set decorator, and prop maker.

She is currently in the process of joining Local 800 Art Directors Guild, where she is excited to work on feature films leading the art department. A perpetual learner, Roary is working towards her design, architecture, welding & rigging certifications.

In her free time, Roary volunteers at Habitat for Humanity, building affordable housing. To unwind, she loves surfing a 9’3 log in Santa Cruz, roller skating around the apex in a roller derby bout, making a racket on drums at a local venue, and soaking up life through her medium format camera lens.

While carpentry and the art department remains a male-dominated industry, Roary prides herself in having forged a passion-filled career in this field. She is proud of her multicultural background and is driven to empower and cultivate future generations of craftspeople who do not identify with the majority.
